In Hawaiian, OHANA Means Family...
Dear St. Paul the Apostle Families,
Our Ohana Fest is a celebration of our community and everyone within our SPA family. This year we are re-imagining our annual festival to adapt to a global pandemic that has left our school corridors empty and our community scattered. Just as our festival has evolved over its forty-year history, so must this year’s festival experience. It will still have Patronage and Class Competitions, Festival Wear, and the Auction, but it will look a little different. Ohana Fest will culminate with a live auction and entertainment that will be brought directly to your home in a virtual event on October 10, 2020. The goal of our Ohana Fest is simple, to bring together our amazing SPA community and help fund our family as we navigate this unique period in time. This year we are reaching out to our entire community: our current and incoming SPA families, alumni, and parishioners for your support.
The administration recently shared with our community the enormous changes and improvements that are being made to keep our school healthy and safe for a return to campus: upgraded ventilation systems, increased cleaning requirements, increased security and additional homerooms, desks and partitions to name a few. In addition, there are numerous expenses required for our school to create a robust and sustainable distance learning environment such as additional teaching staff, more laptops and upgraded audio and visual equipment. No one budgeted for COVID-19.
We are also imagining new ways to engage and support our extended family (Parish, Alumni, and our Seniors). Traditionally our festival helps to support many of the events hosted by our Parent Board, Parents Working for Children (PWC), such as the Spring Sings and Parent Holiday Party. This also includes reaching out to our alumni and welcoming them back for the Mother’s Luncheon and the annual Festival Alumni Pour. These events may still happen, but in a new fashion. Additionally, we will provide assistance to help support our Parish, the foundation of our community, whose in-person collections have decreased by 90% since the pandemic began. Finally, Festival proceeds will help ensure that the most vulnerable of our Ohana, Senior Citizens, can continue to receive communion in the safety of their homes.
SPA has been able to maintain a low tuition rate thanks to the success of prior Festivals. Operating costs and special projects have been offset or paid by Festival funds. This year and next, we will need to not only cover traditional expenses, but we will also need to maintain these new levels of safety and teaching requirements brought on by the pandemic. Our school has also made additional financial aid available for our SPA families. We are looking to you, our school family, to help raise the funds necessary to cover not just the one-time expenses of this year, but the ongoing costs associated with maintaining the health and safety of our school environment and continuing to foster the community for which our school is so well known.
Our Ohana has been impacted by the pandemic in so many ways. Please support however you can.
